While many people are talking (and writing) about Madonna‘s new, controversial video for the song “God Control”, the song of the week is “What It Feels Like For A Girl”, a track from 2001 album “Music”. The video of this song, directed by Guy Ritchie (married to Madonna, back then) and shot in Los Angeles, is one of the queen of pop’s most criticized videos, probably because it shows a woman being violent towards men.
I’ve always liked “What It Feels Like For A Girl” for its strong message about the double standard that exists for women. And I love the sweet voice of Charlotte Gainsbourg emphasizing it, opening and closing the song with a sample from the 1993 film “The Cement Garden”.
Madonna, as a great trend setter, wore an overalls in the video, a piece of garment which is now, 18 years later, pretty stylish.
