Few weeks ago I read a short article about the white bra. I find it interesting so I linked it in my weekly links (it’s the last link).
Since I’ve never thought about the white bra as a kind of statement piece, I decided to write a post about this subject.
When it comes to “underwear rules”, some women have very strict ones.
Some only wear matching bra and panties, no matter what. Some don’t mix fabrics, some would never wear lace, some dislike syntethic fibers. Another fashion/underwear rule some women swear by is “never wear a white bra, neither under white tops”.
I read and browse a lot of American magazines and sites and I often realized the huge difference between American and European women when it comes to fashion and beauty. What Americans find stylish, sometimes we don’t. What Americans find unacceptable, we find acceptable and vice versa. That’s interesting. As French say “Vive la différence” (which means long live the difference).
So it seems that another difference between Americans and Europeans is the use of white underwear.
I think Americans prefer nude underwear, which is very understandable. Nude lingerie is perfect under every color and fabric, even if when it comes to see-through garments I prefer matchy underwear. I mean, a black see-through dress (which immediately makes me think of a Dolce&Gabbana black lace dress) needs black underwear, because nude one would look too much like… underwear!
As for the white bra, I never wear it under black tops. That’s all. My taste. I still remember how disappointed I was when I had to wear a white bra under a black top. It happened when my mother was still “in charge” of my laundry so when I asked her if my black bras were clean she answered that of course they were. But she mistook mine with my sister’s. Mine were still in the laundry basket.
So I had to choose. To wear a white bra under a black top or to stay at home on a saturday night? It wasn’t a Hamletic doubt, I went for black top + white bra, which kept showing up! 🙄 Wearing a white/light top wasn’t an option, maybe I didn’t even have one.
I learnt my lesson well, anyway. Since then, I started washing my clothes by myself!
Anyway, this morning I opened my drawer to check how many white bras I have and I found out I only have one! At first I thought “how is this possible? I was quite sure I had 2 or 3”. Then I realized I don’t even remember the last time I wore a white bra!
I love to dress most of all in black and dark colors. And since I wear black bras also under white tees (if you consider it a pet peeve… I don’t!) a white bra is not so necessary, for me.
Because white bras have one big flaw. They get dirty very easily. If you wear a white bra under dark clothes they can easily stain it. In summer your tanned skin will stain your white bra for sure, most of all its shoulder straps. So, now that I’m thinking about it, I realized that I only have one white bra because I got rid of the ruined (=not so white anymore) ones.
In conclusion, some say that you should never wear a white bra, even under white clothes, because a bra isn’t supposed to be visible, it shouldn’t be a part of your outfit. It’s underwear, after all.
And here’s the difference between Americans and Europeans. Europeans are not afraid of using underwear nonchalantly. We kind of play with it. Are we bolder? Maybe. Are we cheekier? Hmm… I think so. Probably we’re just more relaxed, as we are more relaxed about other things like contouring, teeth whitening, waxing/shaving.
So, do it European style, give white bras a chance!
These are some very cute white bras I found for you.
